Ken McGinley was one of 22,000 young servicemen who witnessed the testing of nuclear tests by the British government between 1952 and 1962. When serving on Christmas Island in 1958 he witnessed five atomic and hydrogen bomb tests; later that year he arrived back home with a series of health problems that led to him being pensioned out of the Royal Engineers.
